My printer won't print.  There are no errors coming up on the printer, and it looks ready to print. However, when I look in my queue, it says that my printer is out of paper.  My printer is NOT out of paper. It is full of paper. I have taken out paper, added it back in, turned on and off my printer, restarted my computer, and nothing helps.  Any ideas?

Hi @JNB9

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing the details—it's understandably frustrating when your printer insists it's out of paper despite a full tray. Let’s walk through a few focused steps to help it recognize the paper and start printing again.

1. Gently Re-seat the Paper Stack

Even slight misalignment can cause misfeeds:

  • Remove all paper from the tray.
  • Fan the stack to separate sheets and reduce static.
  • Reload the paper snugly against the guides.
  • Make sure the tray is not overfilled and the paper type matches your printer’s supported media.

2. Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Dust or wear can prevent proper pickup:

  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the input tray and locate the rubber rollers.
  • Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to clean them.
  • Let them dry for 10 minutes before powering back on.

3. Reset the Printer

This refreshes internal sensors:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the wall.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Try printing again.

4. Check for Paper Type Settings

Incorrect settings can cause misfeeds:

  • On your computer, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer > Printing Preferences.
  • Ensure the paper size and type match what’s loaded (e.g., A4, plain paper).

5. Clear the Print Queue

Sometimes the queue gets stuck:

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer > See what’s printing.
  • Cancel all pending jobs.
  • Try printing a fresh document.

6. Update Printer Firmware

Outdated firmware can misinterpret sensor feedback:

If the issue continues, I can help you isolate whether it’s a sensor calibration issue or a media compatibility conflict. Let me know your printer model and paper type (brand, weight, size), and I’ll tailor the next steps.
