I have a HP Office Jet Pro 8600 Plus.  My printer just stopped working.  The error message is "Problem with the printer or ink system".

I replaced the ink cartridges which did not help.  Any ideas on any pars to be replaced or do I just buy an new  printer?

Hi @Greywolf444,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating this "Problem with the printer or ink system" error can be on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, especially after replacing the cartridges.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you.
1. Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the back and the wall.
  • Wait 30 seconds.
  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn the printer back on.

2. Reseat the Printhead

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove all ink cartridges.
  • Lift the latch and carefully remove the printhead.
  • Reinsert the printhead and lock the latch.
  • Reinstall the cartridges.
  • Close the door and restart the printer.

You may need to reseat the printhead up to 3 times for the error to clear

3. Clean the Printhead Contacts

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Gently clean the gold contacts on the printhead and cartridges.
  • Let them dry for 5 minutes before reinstalling.

4. Check for Dried or Clogged Cartridges

  • Shake each cartridge gently. You should hear liquid inside.
  • If not, it may be dried out and need replacement.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

This has been a reported problem by MANY people for over a year. HP is not addressing it. The long lists of 'fixes' that the HP Support folks write on these pages do not work - they are a waste of time. This FACT has also been reported repeatedly. Support is not addressing the problem, which will destroy HP's reputation. MANY people of even taken suggestion to replace $150 printhead, and then they can't use their ink. I check my diagnostics, and printhead is fine; I won't consider that. Tried 3 new cartridges; all do not fix issue. The only way you can even check the settings, etc in your printer, is to return your empty cartridge to the printer. It will then tell you to replace empty cartridge. Select "OK," but do not replace it. ONLY THEN, can you select "Home" button - or what is on your printer screen - and scroll through options. However, I tried the 'factory reset' suggestion (as did others), and it creates work for you to re-establish your wireless connection. It doesn't fix this LONGSTANDING PROBLEM. I and others agree, HP will not be on shopping list, even though I LOVE my current all-in-one printer scanner.
