I had this same issue with an HP desktop printer today. Went through all the standard troubleshooting steps and ultimately found that changing the print processor from "winprint" to "hpzpplhn" fixed the issue. Perhaps this is not the magic fix for everyone but in this case, the issue was resolved.

We added a quick blog article at http://www.acarte.com/2017/03/23/second-print-job-fails-on-hp-printer/ with details about the problem.

Hope it helps someone else.

I tried this but unfortunately there is no other option showing up on my PC besides winprint. The problem still remains and is a PIA. Printer works fine for printing emails, pdf files with adobe and other applications except MS Office. I even contacted Microsoft and spent 2 hours chatting with them trying various solutions, running the MS Office repair feature and it didn't change a thing. Here I thought it was a MS Office issue but it appears to be a problem with the printer. Using the HP  Print and Scan Doctor for every print job is just not a viable option. What I find strange using this feature is that it keeps saying it has installed recommended updates and fixed the print queue but why in the world does it keep saying that it has installed recommended updates each time? Once they're installed, they shouldn't need to be reinstalled 5 minutes later!

Hopefully someone comes up with a solution soon. Otherwise, this printer is going back where it came from.

Since I had no answer, I contacted the technician in the store I bought it from and he told be to uninstall and reinstall the printer once more (I had already done this once), and if the problem didn't go away, I was dealing with a faulty printer and to bring it back for an exchange.

The one thing I didn't do this time was to set the printer as the defaut printer. That might be what was causing the problem, I don't know but am not willing to try it to find out. I've lost enough time already with this issue.
