We moved this printer and the desktop computer that was using it to another office, and for the first couple of days it worked fine. Now suddenly, it gives an error every time you try to print to it from that computer. Any other computer in the building can print to it, and if I bring my laptop into the office, I can print to it from the laptop. So the location is not the problem. It's connected via the network, as it always was before. I've removed it and reinstalled it a dozen times and I still have to borrow someone else's computer to print anything on it. I've even gone into the registry and removed every instance of it from there, and nothing helps.

Just to wrap this up, I solved the problem permanently (I think, at any rate) by going into the registry and deleting the key for the offending WSD port. The key appeared to be restored after I rebooted, but the printer's port assignment stayed as the TCP port rather than being reassigned to WSD. It is now working as it should. Thanks for the heads up on the WSD problem. I would not have thought to look for that, knowing I had assigned a TCP port.

If you are attaching via network, make sure that the printer driver is not using a WSD port to communicate. If it is, change the port type to Standard TCP/IP making sure to use the IP address of the printer when prompted for an IP address.

It’s a standard TCP port with a properly specified IP address. We’re not using WSD. The installation proceeds normally and finishes with the message that the printer is connected and ready to use. But the first time you send it a print job, you get the message ‘Printer error, unable to print the document.’

Okay, I take it all back. Even though it was installed on a TCP port, when I checked the printer properties again, it showed that it was trying to print through WSD. When I changed to the correct port, it printed a test page, but immediately went back to WSD. It looks as though I may have to specify the port before each print job, which will be a nuisance, but at this point all I care about is being able to print from this computer. What's ironic is that all the other devices on the network are printing to this printer just fine jusing WSD.

The problem has been identified, at least, even if I don't have a permanent fix for it. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
