HELLO! I HAVE THE SOLUTION YOU HAVE BEEN SEEKING!!! THE INFAMOUS OPEN TRAY ERROR! I WILL KEEP THE CAPS BECAUSE THE EXCITEMENT OF THE RIGHT TO FIX OUR OWN PRODUCTS WE PURCHASE. HP WAS NO HELP IN THIS WHATSOEVER! THE ISSUE IS THE SENSOR IN THE BACK PANEL OF THE PRINTER ITSELF. IF THE SENSOR IS NOT COVERED THE ERROR WILL CONTINUE! I HAVE STUCK SMALL ITEMS THAT WEDGE IN TO COVER THE SENSOR( CHALK AS IT FORMED OVER ITT AS TO NOT BREAK.) ONCE
THESE ARE COVERED, POWER ON THE PRINTER AND PRINT. THE PICTURE I HAVE BELOW SHOWS WHICH ONE IS THE ONE TO COVER.
AFTER YOU DO THIS YOU WILL HAVE TO ALIGN THE SCANNER AS WELL BUT YOU SHOULD BE ALL SET AFTERWARDS!! i NO LONGER THAT THE
HP WANTS YOU TO PURCHASE A REPLACEMENT TRAY FULLY. USE THIS AS AN ALTERNATIVE SOLUTION AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO PRINT AGAIN!
SPREAD THIS FAR AND WIDE

You could just fold a piece of paper and insert it in the hole. No need to remove screws, and it's a 1-minute fix.
HP recommend replacing the tray because the part that covers the sensor broke off.
