HP LaserJet Pro M1212nf Multifunction Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

Here's my problem. I have a JP LaserJet Pro M1212nf MFP and when I power it on the printer initializes, during that process I get a 'Scanner Error 22'. I can hear the scanner head trying to move, I don't know where it's trying to go or what it's trying to do. I don't use the Scan feature very often. Maybe a handful of times in the 10yrs I have owned this printer. Yes, it's old.

Previously after one or two power resets the initializing would complete and the printer would be ready. Over time it has taken more and more power resets to achieve this. Today I have powered off and powered on the printer 16 times and I still get the same Scanner 22 error message. I've searched through the menu looking for a way to disable the scanning feature or at least skip it during initialization. There's nothing.

I'm assuming that since it's 10yrs old, and that's since I've owned it... I'm unsure of the mfg date... that there is a possibility of maybe the motor is dying... or the belt... or some other physical component causing the failure to initialize.

Since scanning (or copying/faxing) is no longer a concern for me if there is some sort of work around I can do. Like physically park the scanner head and cut the belt? I suppose I could always remove the glass and move the scanner head manually but I don't know if any of those would do the trick.

Replacing the printer due to a function I don't have a use for, while it does function (when I can get it past the error) for what I want it to, seems wasteful. When it stops being able to print, then I'd replace a printer if you know what I mean.

So, is there anyone here that has an idea as to how I can get this thing past the error and being able to print? As long as the error is on, the printer is considered offline.

Thanks,

  DB

If you want to try you will need to disassemble the scanner unit to reach the scanner head.

Under the scanner head is a motor and worm gear, if you rotate the motor you will see that there is a gap between gears, fix that gap by adjusting the position of the motor and it will probably work fine.
