I have an HP Officejet 5740 (Print, Fax, Scan, Copy, Web) Printer/Scanner. (Product # B9S76A, if you want the Serial # Etc. let me know.)
I am having problems with the Scanning (& Some of the printing capabilities) but for this question I will stick to the main problem currently, which is Scanning.
And just to let ya'll know, I have checked the Firmware and everything is up to date. The machine itself says that there is nothing to download or update (along with my linked laptop).
The scanner is working slowly and really starting to crawl along when it comes to scanning anything now, even if I put it in Black & White, and low resolution. (It's also starting to give rather worsening Grinding and Squeaks, kinda like it's really having a hard time getting the thing to go across the glass in there.)
On top of this the colors are no longer being captured, and really at the moment this is the MAIN problem I have and am worried about. I'm an artist and I *NEED* the Colors to be Captured CORRECTLY! If I can't have this problem fixed or at least lessened greatly I will be FORCED to Again stop using this machine. (I have already been forced to stop using it for printing photographs, and it no longer prints on Card Stock, which is a Terrible thing for me. But this happened when it was fairly new, so I have had to figure out other NON HP Items to use instead.)
It's almost as if the machine has gotten a case of progressively worsening color blindness! It's so ODD, the color RED is no longer being captured and there are several other oddities popping up with all the colors I am trying to scan.
I have tried several different pens, markers, inks, paints, etc. and they all are starting to register an Extremely WASHED OUT almost grayscale mess!
Please if ANYONE has any help for this let me know! This machine has already stopped me from printing out family photos and I have pretty much entirely stopped using it, except for the RARE Medical Documents I'm forced to scan or print.
I'm Sick and Tired of having ti give up HP Items that would be perfectly fine if not for Key Problems.
Overall the machine SEEMS to run perfectly fine, it still prints, In Black & White & Scans (though NOW Very SLOWLY) in Black & White. With the problems I had with this thing from the beginning and the CLEARLY Software items that kept being cut from it I will NOT be buying another HP Product. Period.
But it would go a LONG way if HP would show some Good Faith Actions and at least through this website FIX What it did wrong.
I would like to be able to scan items in FULL Color again, Print Photographs and then Print on Card Stock paper. That was one of the main selling points when I bought it, that I could print on Card Stock.
Thank You in advance to any lowly employees who even attempt to answer.

Hi @Violets,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP Officejet 5740, Here are some suggestions that may help address the scanning and color-related problems you've described.
Check Scanner Glass and Feeder:
- Ensure that the scanner glass is clean and free from any smudges or dirt. Clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- If your scanner has an automatic document feeder (ADF), check it for any debris or obstruction.
Update Drivers:
- Confirm that you have the latest drivers installed for your printer. Visit the HP official website, enter your printer model, and download and install the latest drivers.
Scan Settings:
- Double-check the scan settings to ensure that you are scanning in color. Sometimes settings may default to black and white or grayscale.
- Try adjusting the resolution settings to see if it affects the quality of the scan.
Physical Inspection:
- If there are grinding and squeaking noises, it might indicate a hardware problem. It's possible that something inside the scanner mechanism is obstructed or malfunctioning.
Color Calibration:
- Some printers/scanners allow for color calibration. Check your printer settings or software for any color calibration options and run a calibration process if available.
Alternative Scanning Software:
- Try using alternative scanning software to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is related to the HP software or the scanner itself.
Test with Another Device:
- If possible, try scanning from another device (computer, laptop, etc.) to eliminate the possibility of a software-related issue on your primary computer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
