I have OSX 10.10.5
Printer: photosmart D110a
Today is Oct 31, '17
My scanner worked Oct 18, '17.
On Oct 25, '17, I allowed the computer to install HP Printer Software Update version 5.1
Today I tried to use the scanner but after several seconds of trying it gives the message "Failed to open a session on the device."
You can see a screen shot here:
www.swotfo.com/Troy/screen.png
The printer still works. I printed some things before attempting to scan.
I've restarted the computer and the printer.
I've repaired the permissions on the computer
I installed HP-ePrint_v2.5.0.dmg
I wouldn't mind just undoing the software update but my searching hasn't found a way to do that or the solution to this problem.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello, @CJEsag - Greetings!
Thanks for accessing the HP Support Forums for extra support! I see that you are experiencing trouble while scanning with your Photosmart printer. I will do my best to assist you with this issue 🙂
I would suggest you use “HP Easy Scan” so that you can scan from your computer. HP Easy Scan is a free app from the App Store with tools to scan documents and photos to a Mac running OS X 10.9 or later. Please install it here: http://apple.co/2lsPpwU
Also, check http://hp.care/2d75fhX to get detailed instructions to scan and also to change the settings while scanning.
Please let me know whether that works for you. Thank you!
Cheers 🙂

Are you kidding me? Over 75% of the people who have tried it DON"T like it. The latest update was for performance and stability. It appears I have no choice because it doesn't sound like anything will be done to get my OS-X software to work with my HP printer/scanner.
I used to feel HP was top of the line. That's not my feelig right now.

Hello, @CJEsag
Appreciate your efforts!
Try the steps below to try and fix the issue:
- Uninstall the old printer drivers first. Follow the steps mentioned here: http://hp.care/2cKwLyC
- Now run the Apple Software Update. Check here for steps: http://hp.care/2cNgw3C
- Restart your computer and printer.
- Click the Apple menu icon, and then click “System Preferences”.
- Click “Printers and Scanner” / “Print and Scan” or “Print and Fax”.
- Right-click the blank space in the Printers list, and then click “Reset printing system”.
- Click “Reset” in the confirmation window.
- Enter an administrator username and password, and then click “OK”.
- Wait until the printing system is reset and no devices show in the Printers list
- Now, click http://apple.co/2noCAoI to download and install the printer driver.
- In the “Add printer” window, make sure you add the printer as mentioned below:
- Click the “Add button” (+).
- Find, and then select the name of your printer from the printer list, and then click “Add” to add your printer.
- Click “Print Using...”, and then select the name of your printer (By default “AirPrint” would be selected)
Let me know if that helps!
Good luck 🙂

I have the same problem with an HP 8720 on Max OSX 10.12.6 (Sierra).
I went through the suggested steps to remove the printer, restart, update, install HP printer drivers, add printer.
I still can't scan using "Scan to computer" from the printer, but the message has changed from "Failed to open a session" to "The scanner failed to complete the scan".
It's very frustrating.

I checked the system log for events containing the term "Scan". Looks like there's something here that could identify the problem...
> log show --predicate '(eventMessage contains "Scan")' --style syslog --last 1d
