Hp office jet pro 8600 states on the screen printer failure

Hello,

I’m going to be very clear and structured here, because “Printer Failure” on this model is a serious, hardware-level condition, not a software glitch.

Device context

You’re dealing with an HP OfficeJet Pro 8600.

When this printer displays “Printer Failure” directly on the control panel, that message is generated by the printer’s internal firmware, not by Windows, drivers, or the network.

What “Printer Failure” actually means

On the OfficeJet Pro 8600, this error indicates one of the following internal faults:

  • Printhead electrical failure

  • Ink system pressure failure

  • Carriage/encoder sensor failure

  • Main logic board (formatter) fault

Once this message appears on the printer screen, the unit is already past normal troubleshooting.

First: do the only valid basic reset

This is not a normal power cycle — do it exactly in this order:

  1. With the printer ON, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer

  2. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet

  3. Wait at least 60 seconds

  4. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (no surge protector)

  5. Plug the cord back into the printer

  6. Power on the printer

If the message returns immediately → hardware fault confirmed.

If it boots briefly, then fails again

That usually means:

  • The printer passes initial POST

  • Fails once it tries to initialize the printhead or ink system

This is very common on 8600 units due to:

  • Aging printheads

  • Ink leakage into the electronics

  • Long periods of inactivity

Things that will NOT fix this (important)

🚫 Reinstalling drivers
🚫 Changing ink cartridges
🚫 Cleaning cartridges
🚫 Factory reset from the menu
🚫 Network or USB troubleshooting

If the error is on the printer screen, the PC is irrelevant.

Can this be repaired?

Realistically: No (economically)

For the OfficeJet Pro 8600:

  • Printhead replacement ≈ cost of a new printer

  • Logic board replacement ≈ exceeds printer value

  • HP no longer provides cost-effective service for this model

Even if repaired, failures often recur.

Official HP position

This condition is treated as:

Non-recoverable hardware failure

HP does not provide field repair or firmware recovery for this error on this model.

What I recommend (honest guidance)

Replace the printer

That is the only reliable solution.

If you want:

  • OfficeJet Pro class replacement

  • Compatibility with existing ink plans (if any)

  • Business-class durability

I can recommend current models based on:

  • Home vs office use

  • Color vs mono

  • Cartridge vs subscription preference

Bottom line

  • Not a software issue

  • Not user-serviceable

  • Not worth repairing

  • End-of-life hardware failure
