I've just purchased an HP Envy 5032 inkjet printer. I understand that the printer ought to be left switched on when it's not being used. My printer seems to have entered Sleep Mode because the touch screen has gone off, but the on/off button is still illuminated. Can I leave the printer like this?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Use Sleep Mode and Auto-Off to conserve electricity. Sleep mode Power usage is reduced while in Sleep mode.
After initial setup of printer, the printer will enter Sleep mode after five minutes of inactivity.
Use the following instructions to change the period of inactivity before the printer sleeps. 1. On the printer control panel display, from the Home screen, swipe left to see ( Setup ), and then touch ( Setup ). NOTE: If you do not see the Home screen, touch (Home). 2. Touch Power Management, touch Sleep, and then touch the desired option.
Auto- off
This feature turns the printer off after 2 hours of inactivity to help reduce energy use. Auto-Off turns the printer off completely, so you must use the Power button to turn the printer back on.
If your printer supports this energy saving feature, Auto-Off is automatically enabled or disabled depending on printer capabilities and connection options. Even when Auto-Off is disabled, the printer enters Sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity to help reduce energy use.
● Auto-Off is enabled when the printer is turned on, if the printer does not have network, fax or Wi-Fi Direct capability, or is not using these capabilities.
● Auto-Off is disabled when a printer’s wireless or Wi-Fi Direct capability is turned on or when a printer with fax, USB, or Ethernet network capability establishes a fax, USB, or Ethernet network connection.
TIP: To conserve battery power, you can enable Auto-Off, even when the printer is connected or wireless is turned on.
CAUTION: Always turn the printer off properly, using (the Power button) located on the front left side of the printer. If you improperly turn the printer off, the print carriage might not return to the correct position, causing problems with the cartridges and print quality issues.

Thank you for your advice. I haven't had an opportunity to peruse your reply yet but feel sure that it will answer my query.
In the meantime, I have a more pressing issue. I'm having trouble printing.
We have 2 laptops. One runs on Windows 10 and the other on Windows 8.1. Everything is fine as far as the Windows 10 laptop is concerned, but when I try to print something on the Windows 8.1 machine, I only get the option to save the document. If I try to print say a Word document, it tells me that no default printer has been selected. The printer has been installed but when I go into the control panel and select the printer I'm not given an option to set it to be the default printer. What do I need to do?

Sure, do keep us posted 🙂
For your Computer with 8.1, try these steps:
Are you using the HP Smart App on your PC? If not, you may try and install to see if that works: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04675142. If yes, uninstall and reinstall it.
If the issue persists, try these steps:
Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:
Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93
If the issue still persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Many thanks for your detailed response to my enquiry about printing with our Windows 8.1 laptop.
Last night I appear to have stumbled upon the solution to my problem. When I opened Devices & Printers in the control panel, the HP printer that was installed did not show a picture of our actual printer but just a general printer icon. As a last resort I clicked on Add Printer and found that another HP printer came up in addition to the one already installed. When I installed this 'second' printer, the icon showed a picture of our actual printer and all the features were there. I then successfully printed a test page. Hopefully this has solved the problem. I just hope that I can still print from our Windows 10 laptop, but I don't see why I should not.
With regard to Sleep Mode, I'll take your advice and leave the printer plugged in and connected to the network. It's just that I grew up in an age when you always switched things off to save energy and to stop things overheating. Obviously, times have changed.
Again, many thanks for your assistance and If I run into any more issues I will be in touch.
