After a win update in October my HP Deskjet F4500 (SN: [edited] PN: CB755B) printer (WIFI network connected) seems to pose between every line for a few seconds resulting in very slow printing (even in draft mode) . Al soft is up to date (incl. KB4517389). Soluton Center is installed for scanning and working. The "HP print an scan doctor" does not return any faults. My wife's brand new laptop has the same printing problem. When printing from my Ubuntu laptop... the printer works very fine (and fast).
Anyone an idea how to solve this? Thanks!!

The issue of slow printing you are describing is caused by one of the cartridges failing (perhaps as a result of running out of ink). You can determine which cartridge is at fault as follows:
- First, remove the cartridges and clean the cartridge and printer's electrical contacts with a damp lint-free tissue, then reinstall the cartridges in the printer and send a print job from the Windows computer. If the issue persists move to the next step.
- Remove the black cartridge and set aside with the nozzles facing up. Next send a print job from the Windows computer. If the printer now prints at nearly normal speed the issue was with the black cartridge, which would need to be replaced. If the printer still runs slowly move to the next step.
- Reinsert the black cartridge and remove the color cartridge. Set the color cartridge aside with its nozzles up. Send a print job from the Windows computer. If the printer now prints at normal speed the issue was the color cartridge. Replace it to resolve the issue.
The fact that the Linix driver prints at normal speed is an interesting twist. This is likely caused by the driver only using the color or black cartridge. Does the Ubuntu driver only print in B&W/Grayscale? If so the issue is likely the color cartridge. If the Ubuntu driver prints in color then it is likely that the driver is sending data to the printer in a way that uses only the color cartridge. In this case the black cartridge is likely at fault. Checking this would be a check of the information found in the Windows printing with single cartridges as found above.
The root cause of the issue is related to the thermal control system the printer uses to make sure the cartridges are operating at the proper temperature. If the thermal system is not working properly (due to a failed cartridge) the printer will wait at the end of the swath for up to fifteen seconds for the printhead to either cool or heat.

Hi Bob,
I cleaned everything and went step by step as you suggested..
But this did not solve the problem.
I think it is a communication protocol problem in win10
Pauses in between lines varies somewhat between 6 à 12 secs.
Any further suggestions?
regards,
Ps. when giving a print command the first time (or after a while) the system answers "couldn't print..."
Then after 6 or 10 secs it has contact and says "started printing" (printer online..), then starts the printing job in line by line intermitted mode.

Did you try removing first the black and then the color cartridge as listed above? What were the printing results with the black or color cartridge removed?
One other thing to check - try making a color and then black/white copy from the printer's front panel. Do these also print slowly?

I would not expect scanning to be affected by a non-blocking cartridge issue. Did you actual make copies from the front panel?
Could you please confirm what results you get printing with the Windows system with the black cartridge removed? What about with the black cartridge replaced and the color cartridge removed?
Please go to the Control Panel, Devices and Printers, right-click on the Deskjet F4500, Printer Properties, Ports. What is the port listed?

Hi Bob, both scanning was done manual with the buttons at the top of the printer,
I removed black and colour on turn so alternatively printing with one of them, printing result did not differ much (and both being a slow process), except for no colour of course with only the black cartridge installed.

A couple things to check: see the document here for addressing printing issue after Windows 10 updates.
On the Windows machine please go to the Control Panel, Devices and Printers, right-click on the Deskjet F4500, Printer Properties, Ports. What is the port listed? If it is a WSD port I would suggest changing it to a Standard TCP/IP Port.
This may be the first case I have seen where a 5-15 second delay at the end of each sweep is not caused by a bad cartridge.

The fact that the printer makes copies at normal speed and that the issue remains for the Windows computers even with either the black or color cartridge removed indicates the cartridges are not the issue. As I mentioned, this is the first case I have seen with 5-15 second delays at the end of a swath that was not caused by a failed cartridge.
Did you go through the troubleshooting steps here?
I am out of ideas in this one, I will ask to have some other experts take a look at your case.
