I always use HP ink cartridges. For the past few weeks I have received "supply problem" for the black cartridge. A few times the printer started working. However, mostly it doesn't. I have tried so many options but to no avail. These cartridges are EXPENSIVE and I can not understand why this issue has not been fixed. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @Pianistfrank,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to deal with a persistent "supply problem" on your HP Color LaserJet Pro M254DW, especially when using authentic HP cartridges. Here are some steps that may help resolve this issue.
Check Cartridge Installation
- Reinstall the cartridge: Remove the black toner cartridge and reinstall it to ensure it is seated properly.
- Inspect for damage: Make sure the cartridge is not damaged, leaking, or showing signs of wear.
Reset the Printer
- Hard Reset: Unplug the printer for 60 seconds and then plug it back in. This can help clear any temporary errors.
- Reset Printer Settings: Sometimes, restoring factory settings can resolve persistent supply issues. This will also clear any network or configuration settings, so be sure to note them down beforehand.
Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- Clean the contacts: Turn off the printer, remove the black cartridge, and clean the metal contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with a soft cloth or a lint-free wipe. Be gentle to avoid damaging the cartridge.
Check for Firmware Updates
- Sometimes, firmware updates can fix issues related to cartridge detection. Check for any updates in your printer's settings or through the HP Smart app.
Test the Cartridge
- Try a different cartridge: If possible, try a new or known-working black cartridge to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the cartridge itself is faulty.
Ensure Compatibility
- Verify that the toner cartridge is the correct model and compatible with your printer (HP 202A or 202X for the M254DW).

Check for Software Issues
- If connected to a network, ensure there’s no conflicting settings or print jobs stuck in the queue. You can also try printing directly via a USB connection to rule out network-related issues.
Run a Printer Diagnostic
- Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool for any automated troubleshooting. It can help identify and resolve supply issues.
Check Printer Settings (Admin Mode)
- Access the printer’s web interface by typing the printer’s IP address into a browser. Look for any settings related to "Supply Status" or "Cartridge Management."
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
