I had posted as jgdnewburyport, but for some reason can't log in so am using another address where I could.  I had this issue after a "programming" message showed up on my printer one morning last week.  After that the printer showed a supply problem.  Like many, I have been using after market printer cartridges for a couple of years.  I saw the solution to try and downgrade to a previous firmware release and tried to install a few but failed, so there was not one that I could find for this printer.  I had a set of HP printer cartridges available and so I put them in the printer and poof, everything was just fine.  So the purpose of the firmware update was to detect and shut out those of us using after market print cartridges.  This is the kind of thing that will probably end up being litigated against HP as it should.  In the meantime, I am handcuffed to using HP cartridges at a cost of $235 compared to $89 for the aftermarket cartridges.  I bought an extra set right away, since I expect the next thing for HP is to raise the prices now that they have a captive market.  I hope this helps those who don't understand what happened.  Nice Thanksgiving present HP...
