macOS 12.0 Monterey

I have a Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M183 connected to an Apple laptop.  When I hit print, the printer seems to think that I am manually feeding the paper and then suddenly cancels the job.

Hi @Martin339

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183 is incorrectly detecting manual feed and subsequently canceling print jobs, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Check Paper Settings

  • Paper Size: Ensure that the paper size set in the printer's settings matches the paper size you are using. Mismatched settings can lead to feeding issues.
  • Paper Type: Verify that the paper type selected in the print dialog matches the paper you are using (e.g., plain paper, heavy paper).

2. Check Printer Settings on Laptop

  • Open the Print dialog on your laptop when you attempt to print:
    1. Select Printer > Print Settings (or similar).
    2. Make sure Media Type is set to Plain Paper or the appropriate type.

3. Inspect the Paper Tray

  • Paper Alignment: Ensure that the paper is properly aligned in the tray and that the tray guides are snug against the edges of the paper.
  • Paper Quality: Make sure the paper you are using is not damaged, wrinkled, or too thick. Sometimes, using very thick or textured paper can cause feeding issues.

4. Clear Any Obstructions

  • Open the printer’s paper path and check for any obstructions or jammed paper. Remove any stuck pieces carefully.
  • Clean any visible dust or debris from the paper feed rollers with a lint-free cloth.

5. Reset the Printer

  • Turn the printer off and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

6. Update Printer Firmware

  • Ensure your printer has the latest firmware:
    1. Go to the HP support website and look for firmware updates for the Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183.
    2. Follow the instructions to update the firmware if necessary.

7. Check Network Connection

  • If you’re printing over a network, ensure that the printer is properly connected to your network and recognized by your laptop.

8. Print a Test Page

  • Try printing a test page directly from the printer’s control panel. If it prints successfully, the issue may be with the laptop settings.

9. Try a Different Application

  • If you’re using a specific application to print (like Word or a PDF reader), try printing from a different application to see if the issue persists.

10. Reinstall the Printer

  • If none of the above steps work, try removing and reinstalling the printer on your laptop:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    2. Select your printer and click the minus (-) button to remove it.
    3. Click the plus (+) button to add the printer again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
