Today my printer is not able to print envelopes, I get the same error message when I manually feed envelopes to tray 1 (ready…printing…cancelling).
Model: HP LaserJet Pro M404dn
Troubleshooting that I conducted:
- Update the printer's firmware.
- Reboot the printer.
- Reinstall the latest driver for the HP M404.
- Remove the previous printer from the Printers and Settings.
- Re-add the printer with IP address 10.10.10.55, designated for Harbi.
- Print a test letter; if the letter still doesn't print from Tray 1, further troubleshooting may be needed.

Hi @DenDenDiaz,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It looks like you’ve already done a lot of the key troubleshooting steps for your HP LaserJet Pro M404dn. Since you’re still encountering issues with printing envelopes from Tray 1, here are some additional steps and checks you might consider:
Verify Tray Settings:
- Go to the printer's settings menu (either on the printer’s display panel or via the web interface).
- Ensure that Tray 1 is correctly configured for envelope printing. Sometimes the tray settings need to be adjusted to match the media type and size.
Check Tray Alignment and Paper Size Settings:
- Make sure that the envelope is properly aligned and positioned in Tray 1. Sometimes, improper alignment can cause feeding issues.
- Verify that the paper size settings in both the printer and your print job match the size of the envelopes you’re using.
Examine Tray and Feed Mechanism:
- Inspect Tray 1 and the feed mechanism for any obstructions or paper jams. Sometimes small debris or paper fragments can cause feeding issues.
- Ensure that the tray is properly seated in the printer and that any paper guides or adjustments are set to the envelope size.
Check for Firmware and Driver Compatibility:
- Confirm that the firmware and drivers are fully compatible with your printer model and operating system. Sometimes a mismatch or incomplete installation can cause unexpected issues.
Printer Settings in the Application:
- When sending a print job, ensure that the print settings in the application you’re using are configured to use Tray 1 for envelope printing. Double-check the print setup dialog for any specific tray settings or media type options.
Perform a Printer Reset:
- Sometimes performing a full reset of the printer can resolve persistent issues. You can usually find the reset option in the printer's menu settings.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- HP offers a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor. It can help identify and resolve common printing issues. Download and run it to see if it can find any issues with your printer setup.
Check Network Issues:
- Since you’re using an IP address to connect to the printer, ensure there are no network issues that might be causing communication problems. Sometimes network configuration issues can affect printing.
Try Printing from Another Application or Computer:
- If possible, try printing envelopes from a different application or computer to see if the issue is specific to your current setup or if it persists across different systems.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
