My printer wasn't connecting to my wifi network, so I tried to reset it. I am now able to connect via the HP Smart app, however it won't allow me to finish setup without the setup cartridges. I've had this printer for ages so of course I don't have those. A search in these forums tells me I need to do a OOB reset? Can I get any help with that please?

Hi @melissaivone,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

An out-of-box (OOB) reset is a factory reset that restores your printer to its original, like-new condition. This can help you bypass the need for setup cartridges and start fresh with your printer's configuration. Here are the general steps to perform an OOB reset on an HP Tango printer.

  • Ensure that your printer is powered on and in a ready state.
  • Open the input tray and remove any paper.
  • With the printer powered on, locate the power button and hold it down for at least 5 seconds. The printer's power light should start flashing.
  • While continuing to hold the power button, open the input tray, and then release the power button.
  • Wait for the printer to finish the OOB reset process, which may take a few minutes. The power light may continue to flash during this time.
  • Once the OOB reset is complete, the printer should power off and then power back on. The power light should stabilize.
  • After the printer has restarted, it should be in a like-new state and ready for setup.

Now, try setting up your HP Tango printer using the HP Smart app or the setup process. You should no longer be prompted to use setup cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm not exactly sure what counts as the "power light." Is that the same as the Paper Input light, Ink Door button and lightEdge lightingCancel button and lightInformation button and light, or Resume button and light? Either way, holding down the power button for 5+ seconds doesn't result in anything flashing, and when I open the input tray and release the button, the printer powers off.

The edge lighting is glowing amber and the HP Smart app is still saying I need to use the setup cartridges. Also, I misspoke, I actually have an HP Tango X. Thank you.
