I have a macbook air OS Mojave 10.14.6, trying to print to hp officejet pro 8600 premium. I downloaded recommended drivers from hp; I can print a Printer Status Report, but no documents. The error message says 'printer configuration is incorrect or the printer no longer exists.' The printer just goes to 'idle'. Help!

@janieben, Welcome to HP Support Community!

To be able to assist you better, I'd like to know the following-

  • Are you able to print from other devices?
  • Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results?

Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.

Meanwhile, Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

Keep me posted for further assistance.

I downloaded HP Easy Start - Essential Software and HP Easy Scan. While installing, this popped up:  System extension cannot be used. The system extension “/Library/Extensions/hp_fax_io.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product’s vendor for an update.

I don't need the tax to work on the printer, so I'm guessing that's ok...the software installed completely. When asked to print a test page, I tried to do that. It would not print a test page. Tried printing a document; would not print.

The name of the default printer was HP Officejet Pro 8600. I had one more printer on the system - Officejet Pro 8600. I tried printing to that one and it WORKED!!!  Not sure why or how, but I now have a printing system again!

Many thanks for your help and assistance!

Well, I thought my printing problem was solved, but it isn't. Trying to print from my Macbook Air Mojave 10.14.6 to HP Officejet Pro Premium all-in-one. I can print a test page, the ping test was fine, but the only way it will print is if I go into the  other room to the printer, turn it off, then turn it back on, then it will print if I print right away. Any ideas?

Let's try the below steps to see if that helps -

1.) Remove All Barriers: Certain building materials can get in the way of weaker signals like Bluetooth. Metal, bulletproof glass, concrete, and plaster are particularly bad, and marble, plaster, and brick aren’t great easy. So if you’re really struggling with interference, your first step should be to move your Bluetooth devices away from these materials. That means no brick walls between you and your devices, and definitely no metal desks!

2.) Change Router Channel: If you have an Apple router and you’re constantly getting interference with your WiFi, try rebooting it. Upon restart, the station will search for a new channel. Specifically, a different channel than the one your Bluetooth devices is using to communicate. If you don’t have an Apple router, you may need to instead go into your router settings and try changing the channel manually. Experiment with different channels to see which one works best.

3.) Move Closer to Your Router: If you often find that you’re getting interference when talking on a wireless headset while on a WiFi call (you’ll know because you’ll hear static), try moving closer to your router. This will give you a more robust WiFi connection, so the Bluetooth frequency can’t overpower it.

4.) Get Away From Microwaves and Fluorescent Lighting: Both emit frequencies of 2.4GHz, and moving away from them will distance you from the source.

The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera. Share the ping test results and the screenshot with us.

Here is the screenshot. Ping test was normal. It does this even when I am sitting right next to the printer with my macbook, so there are no barriers. I do not get interference when talking on a headset from my router. Typically, I sit in the same room as the router, so I don't think that is the problem. I will ask my husband about changing the router channel, as that is beyond my skillset.  As you can see, the printer shows up as connected via wifi. I just tried to print a page and the dialog box said 'printer is not connected'. This is a mystery!!! 🙂

Thanks! I will keep you posted.

Similar problem here — printer stopped being "available" over wireless, even though the *printer* thinks it's connected to the same network as my computers. No line-of-sight problems etc. This morning I resorted to running ethernet from my router to the network RJ45 port on the back of the printer, and running the hp installation program from scratch. Installation *claims* to go well. But test page will not print, results in "The printer configuration is incorrect or the printer no longer exists" error.

One potential additional clue: when the printer was not responsive, over wireless, sometimes it would spontaneously connect at some random moment and print a job from the day before. One potential further clue: I think the trouble started when I told my wireless router to "combine" its 5G and 2.4 channels into a single network (that would auto-configure device connections); after that, even completely re-doing the 8600 wireless setup (which had always acted "fine" from the printer end anyway) made no difference. Stilly, while that might be a clue to the initial problem, it doesn't explain why the printer is unresponsive even once a *wired* connection to network router was put in place...

@espringer, Welcome to HP Support Community!

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue. Yes, the problem would have arisen when you merged both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks. We suggest you have different SSIDs for each of the networks.

And the reason why it did not work with an ethernet cable could be because the computer would be in the 5GHz network while the printer would be connected to the 2.4GHz network via ethernet.

I hope that answers your concern adequately. Let me know!
