Howdy folks,
My office recently got an HP Laser Jet Pro 3201DW for printing smaller things, and I was wondering if there is a way to disable the tray empty warning for tray 1 on the device. Its mostly a minor thing, but it does confuse some of our staff as it shows that the printer is out of paper when they connect to it even though we almost always print from tray 2 which we keep filled. I have explored the embedded web server, but haven't found a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @Dwing5959,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To turn off the tray empty warning for Tray 1 on your HP LaserJet Pro 3201DW, it may not be a direct setting that can be toggled from the printer's embedded web server or control panel. However, there are a couple of approaches you can try.
Change Default Tray in Printer Settings: If Tray 2 is always being used for printing, set it as the default tray so that the printer won't rely on Tray 1 by default. This could minimize the appearance of the Tray 1 empty warning.
- Open the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the printer’s IP address in a browser.
- Go to Settings > Tray Settings.
- Set Tray 2 as the default tray for printing.
- This will ensure that Tray 2 is always used unless specifically overridden by a print job.
Disable Alerts via EWS (if available): Some printers have the ability to adjust warning settings via the Embedded Web Server, but it seems this option might not be explicitly available for Tray 1. Still, it's worth re-checking the Notification Settings in EWS:
- In the Embedded Web Server, navigate to Settings > General Settings > Printer Alerts.
- Look for any options related to paper tray warnings or alerts and try disabling them.
Firmware Update: Occasionally, new firmware updates introduce additional features or settings related to warnings and alerts. If you haven't already, check for a firmware update to see if it offers better control over the tray empty warnings:
- From the EWS or the printer's control panel, you can check for and install the latest firmware.
If none of these options resolve the issue, disabling the warning might not be fully possible without affecting other features. You could also consider training staff to ignore the warning for Tray 1 when it's empty.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
