I recently installed new HP print cartridges and now I'm getting the following error message and nothing prints.

The indicated cartridges have been recently identified as used or counterfeit.

How can a brand new HP ink cartridge be identified as used or counterfeit and how do I fix?  Nothing seems to work through diagnostics, remove/reinstall cartridges, etc.

Hi @knov,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Used or Counterfeit Cartridges" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 can be frustrating. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Verify Cartridge Authenticity:

  • Check Packaging: Ensure the cartridges came in HP-branded packaging and have HP security seals.
  • Verify Cartridge Number: Compare the cartridge number on the packaging with the number listed in your printer’s manual or HP’s website to ensure compatibility.

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Reinstall Cartridges: Remove the cartridges and reinsert them, making sure they click into place properly.
  • Clean Contacts: Gently clean the copper contacts on both the cartridges and the printer using a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with water. Allow everything to dry before reinserting.

Reset the Printer:

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check for Updates: Ensure your printer's firmware is up-to-date. You can usually update this through the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
