HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I canceled Instant Ink and replaced it with a store bought HP cartridge and now when I try to print it give me an error message that says, "User Intervention."
I can't find a fix. I have reset the printer by unplugging the power for 60 seconds, but still have same error message.

Hi @Tshu1 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the "User Intervention" error message on your HP OfficeJet 4650 printer typically indicates that there's an issue that requires your attention or intervention to resolve.

Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Check Paper Tray and Cartridges:

  • Make sure that there is enough paper in the paper tray and that it is loaded correctly.
  • Ensure that the cartridges are installed correctly and securely. Remove and reinsert them to ensure they are properly seated.

Verify Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the store-bought HP cartridge you installed is compatible with your HP OfficeJet 4650 printer. Using incompatible cartridges can cause errors.

Check for Protective Strips:

  • Ensure that you have removed any protective strips or tapes from the cartridges. These strips may prevent the cartridges from functioning properly.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 1-2 minutes to allow the printer to reset completely.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. You can usually find this information on the HP support website. Updating the firmware can resolve many known issues.

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Sometimes, corrupted printer drivers can cause errors. Try uninstalling the printer drivers from your computer and reinstalling the latest drivers from the HP website.

Check Printer Settings:

  • Ensure that the printer settings, such as paper size and type, are correctly configured to match the settings of the paper you are using.

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Perform a hard reset on your printer by following these steps:
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
    • Wait for about a minute.
    • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
    • Turn on the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
