The copies of documents printed using the feeder show two 1/4 inch black lines from top to bottom of the copy. I tried cleaning the two rollers with alcohol and manually scraping their surface, gradually the black lines are lighter, but the rollers do not turn all the turn to been able to clean them on their entire rotation. Are these two rollers becoming dirty the actual reason for the problem? Am I doing the correct procedure to solve the problem?

It appears to me that even when the two rollers are at about the same position of the dark long strikes on the printed copy the rollers are actually performing a feeding function of the original for it to be scanned for the copy and should have no role on the printing action of a copy.  Copies show no black lines when using the flatbed to feed the original.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Clean the plastic and glass strips inside the document feeder with a soft, lint-free cloth sprayed with glass cleaner.

NOTE:

Some printers ship with a document feeder cleaning cloth. If you have the cloth, load it into the document feeder and start a copy job to clean the scanner mechanism.

  1. Turn the printer off, disconnect the power cord, and then remove the battery if your printer has one.

  2. Depending on your printer model, open any top cover, document feeder tray, and scan document feeder cover.

  3. Look for and remove any dust or debris from inside the document feeder.

  4. Spray a soft, lint-free cloth with glass cleaner, and then wipe the scanner glass and the white strip on the underside of the document feeder until clean, dry, and streak-free.

       CAUTION:

To protect the interior printer parts, do not spray the cleaner directly on or into the printer.

  5. Completely close any covers and trays that you opened.

  6. Reconnect the power cord, reinstall the battery if necessary, and then turn on the printer.

  7. Load the original document or photo, and then start a copy job.

If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Clean the ADF rollers

Dust or paper residue on the rollers or separator pad inside the automatic document feeder (ADF) can result in copy quality issues.

  1. Gather the following materials:

    • A clean, lint-free cloth, or any cloth that does not come apart or leave fibers

    • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the printer)

  2. Remove the original document from the ADF.

  3. Turn the printer off, disconnect the power cord, and then open the ADF cover.

  4. Find any paper pick rollers and the separator pad inside the ADF. These parts have a rubber covering.

  5. Lightly dampen the cloth with the water, squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth, and then wipe any residue off the rollers and separator pad.

  6. Leave the ADF cover open for two minutes to allow the parts to dry, and then close the cover.

  7. Reconnect the power cord, turn on the printer, and then start a copy job.

Reset the printer to clear certain error states by calibrating the copier mechanism, and then check the power source to confirm the printer is getting enough power to operate the copier.

  1. Press the Power button to turn on the printer, if it is not already on.

  2. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  3. Disconnect the power cord from the power source, and then wait 60 seconds.

  4. If you previously connected the power cord to a power strip or multi-plug outlet adapter, reconnect the cord directly to a wall outlet to ensure the printer is getting enough power.

  5. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then turn on the printer.

  6. If you have an HP DeskJet 3700 series printer, calibrate the scanner after resetting the printer.

  7. Load the original document or photo, and then start a copy job.

    • If the issue persists, connect the printer power cord to a different wall outlet to determine if the original outlet is causing the issue.

Thank you for your detailed response.

Judging by how the issue has shown improvement , the second part of your instructions, the rubber rollers, appear to be applicable to my case, because as I clean them, the copies show less black bars, however, as I said, the rollers do not freely turn the whole rotation for proper cleanup. opening the feeder shows the rollers only at about 1/4 rotation and not moving.

Therefore:

1) how to make the rollers rotate for a full clean up?

2) why the final copy is affected (black bars) by rollers which function appears to be only to move the original document in position for copying it, not used for the copy itself?

Thank you

That would be the only way to rotate the rollers. You may try cleaning them again.

The rollers while picking up the paper, might be leaving an impression which in your case are the black bars.

Thank Betsy but by your response it seems you did not read my last post:

Your statement “That would be the only way to rotate the rollers. You may try cleaning them again. “

I said several times that the rollers do not allow for manual rotation for a full cleanup, when opening the feeder door the two rollers are exposed at only 1/4 rotation and because they cannot be rotated more manually I can only clean that part of the roller.

Instruct me how to make those rollers rotate so the recommended clean up can be done properly.  If they cannot be rotated to be cleaned then you have a design problem that precludes proper maintenance.

Regarding the marks left for the rollers, if we are talking about the same rollers they appear to transport the original between the feeder and the glass and there are no marks on the original, marks are only on the copy, which is not transported by those rollers, so your explanation does not correspond to the same rollers, and quite frankly I do not see how a roller that transport an original can mark a copy but not the original.
