I bought  a Win10 after using a Win 7 for years.  I do not like the HP Smart printing app but I can't find a way to uninstall it or at least make it not my default.  I want to be able to select text to be printed and print only the selection.  That option is not available on HP Smart.  I am used to selecting text, pressing  Cntrl + P and printing my selection.  Please help!!  Thank you

➡️  HP Smart is not mandatory software - you can use it when necessary, ignore it, or uninstall it.

Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

Scroll down to find HP Smart application

Click and select Uninstall

If you change your mind later and want to install the application...

NOTE:

Default apps are selected in Settings > Apps > Default Apps  > Set Defaults by App

Know this before you remove HP Smart

Without a print program associated with the protocol or application, you cannot simply print using "cntrl P"

NOTE:

The Windows 10 file and application controls for default actions are visually different from Windows 7 - the two Operating Systems control essentially the same type of protocols and associations.

There are lots of articles and how-to documents available to help - use your favorite search engine and look for information.  For example, search for Default apps in Windows 10

➡️  Printer software for your printer

If you are willing to use applications to view and submit your documents / photos / images to the printer for scanning and printing, install the Full Feature Software for the printer.  This is the "full driver" software for the printer.  You want this.

HP OfficeJet 5200 All-in-One Printer series Full Feature Software and Driver

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log it.

If the default printing device does not switch to the printer, check / adjust the setup.

Set the Preferences - Windows

  1. The following assumes the Full Feature Software has been installed.
  2. Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”
  3. Select and adjust settings in each category for the Media (kind of paper), source (tray), and paper size.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your printer > Set as Default

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences >

Tab Printing Shortcuts > Click / Highlight preferred shortcut > Click Apply > Click OK to exit

If the printer software supports the feature, change the settings as desired, then use “Save as” to create a Custom Shortcut.

OR

Windows key + S (search for) Printers and Scanners

Left-Click on (your) Printer > Manage >

Printing Preferences

Select a shortcut and / or set “preferred settings” for paper, source (tray), other settings

Optional (if / as available): Save As > enter a name for your custom shortcut

Click OK to save the preferences

➡️  Print Selection on screen

Printing selected content is controlled not by the basic print protocol but instead is a result of specialized software that allows you to preselect the content and then pass it to the print job submission.

As I recall, Internet Explorer could do this, although I have not used IE in a very long time - I do not know whether IE is still used and / or whether the function is around.

Browser > Internet Explorer 11

Open the email / browser window you want to print

Left-Click and hold > highlight / drag and select the area on the screen you wish to include in your print

Click File > Print Preview

CHANGE As laid out on screen to As selected on Screen

Toggle Headers / footers section   On / Off

Select / change Shrink to fit or page size percentage

Select / change

 Portrait or Landscape

Click Printer icon

Under Page Range > Select Selection > Print

You can always use "snip" to grab content, save it into a .jpg file, open the file and print that.
