My Laser Jet printer (model PRO MFP M283fdw) went bad and was replaced by HP under warranty. They sent me a refurbished unit and instructed me to move my original HP toner cartridges from the original printer to the replacement printer before turning the original unit.
The replacement printer installed fine and works as it should, with the exception of the toner level feature. The HP software on both the printer and my HP app show the toners are used and will not provide an indication of the levels.
I spent an hour on the phone with HP support and the end result is I just have to live with it. HP doesn't have a solution. The tech support person recorded the case as "resolved" because "there is nothing wrong with the printer. So I'm assuming nothing gets report up the management chain about this being a problem.
Anyone in the support community have a workaround?
I understand HP's concern about counterfeit cartridges in relation to standing behind their warranty, but I fail to understand why HP cares whether or they are used authentic HP cartridges and frankly they shouldn't care about the source of the cartridge once the printer's warranty has expired? Granted their business model is probably sell the printers for minimal profit and make most of their profits on replacement cartridges. However, providing a longer warranty on the printer with embedded software that alerts you when you've loaded a counterfeit cartridge and will void you warranty if you continue to use it. Used authentic HP cartridges should have no restrictions. Thoughts?

The challenge is that depending on the model, users can opt for data to be stored in the printer or on the cartridge. If data on cartridge use was stored in the printer, when the cartridge is moved to another printer, the new printer has NO idea what the toner levels are and therefore can only display the generic "used cartridge" message, which is not the same as the non-HP cartridge message.
