I have a new HP processor but an older Officejet G85 printer. I have the correct adapter cables. The processor recognizes the printer but will only print test page. Do I need to download new software for the printer to function properly?

You say that you have the proper adapter cables. The Officejet G85 as a USB port (next to the parallel port). Using a standard A/B USB cable would be a much better solution than using a USB to parallel converter. The converter requires an additional layer of drivers and they are often problematic.
For the driver you can install the driver supplied through Windows Update as described in the document here.
