HP OfficeJet 6950
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just bought my brand new OfficeJet 6950 last month. I have only used it 4 times. The first time was the required set up page that printed, the last 3 times have been less than one page black and white invoice receipts. So please explain to me how my printers ink can be drying out already and that over half of the inks are gone already when I haven't printed anything of color, and  when I have it set to economy print in the grayscale setting. Also my printer is always on. when I first plugged it in the printer did the sleep mode till I printed the next time, but now I have no choice but to turn it off all the time. It will not sleep at all. and when my wireless printer can't go into sleep mode there is alot of wasted walking for this disabled person to do just to turn on the printer and turn off the printer when I bought it specifically to have a sleep mode. Please help

Hi! @ArchieBunk1, Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges on the printer?

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

Are you using regular or XL size cartridges?

Are you using HP genuine ink cartridges?

Let's continue with the troubleshooting steps now.

Try replacing low, empty or defective ink cartridges on the printer.

If you are printing photos from the printer it would use too much ink to print.

Ink is used in a number of ways throughout the inkjet printing process. In general, ink in an ink cartridge is used for printing documents, photographs and other such materials. Some ink, however, must be used to maintain the health of the print head; some ink is residual and some ink evaporates. These uses of ink are common, in varying degrees, to printers from all inkjet printer manufacturers. The methodologies used to measure page and photo yield do not account for all the uses of ink described above and therefore your actual yield may vary considerably from the published yield. HP designs its inkjet printer systems to deliver outstanding value in printing customer documents while using enough ink to maintain a reliable printing system that delivers outstanding print quality over the life of the printer.

Follow these steps to clean the cartridges from the printer control panel.

  1. Load U.S. Letter or A4 size, unused, plain white paper into the input tray.

  2. On the printer control panel, swipe the display to the left, and then touch Setup (). The Setup menu displays.

  3. Swipe the display up, and then touch Printer Maintenance.

  4. Touch Clean Cartridges. A Print Quality Diagnostic report prints.

  5. Examine the Print Quality Diagnostic report.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Proceed when prompted to continue the next level of cleaning. Repeat these steps for the third cleaning stage, if necessary.

         NOTE:

If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform all three levels of cleaning again.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, touch Done when prompted to continue the next level of cleaning. You do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  6. Examine the print quality on the Print Diagnostic report.

   NOTE:

To avoid issues that require cleaning, always turn the printer off with the Power button.
