My printer is an OFFICEJET 4500.  When I press print button, it asks me for information and I can't anywhere from there.  Have not had this problem before.

Hi @Maineman3

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 4500 is prompting you for some kind of input when you try to print, which is unusual. This could be related to a printer setting, a software issue, or a configuration problem. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Printer Display and Buttons

  • Look for an Error Message: If the printer has a display screen, check if there is any error message or instruction that might explain what it's asking for.
  • Cancel the Job: If the printer is stuck asking for input, try canceling the print job from the printer itself (via the control panel or buttons).
  • Reset the Printer: Turn the printer off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on to see if this resolves the issue.

2. Check Print Settings on Your Computer

Sometimes, print settings on the computer may trigger prompts for input.

  • Printer Properties:
    • On Windows: Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click on the HP OfficeJet 4500, and select Printer Properties.
    • On macOS: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and then click Options & Supplies.
    • Look for any unusual settings such as page size, paper type, or other options that might be causing the printer to request additional information.
  • Check for Custom Printer Settings: Make sure the default paper size, media type, and other settings are set correctly, and reset any custom settings if necessary.

3. Clear Print Queue

Sometimes, an issue in the print queue can cause a printer to prompt for input or behave unexpectedly.

  • Clear Print Jobs:
    • On Windows: Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, and choose See what's printing. Cancel any pending print jobs.
    • On macOS: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and click Open Print Queue to clear the jobs.

4. Reinstall Printer Drivers

Sometimes printer driver issues can cause the printer to behave abnormally.

  • Reinstall the Printer:
    • Uninstall the printer driver from your computer.
    • Download and install the latest drivers from HP’s official website for the OfficeJet 4500.
    • After reinstalling, restart the computer and try printing again.

5. Check for Connectivity Issues

Make sure the printer is properly connected to your computer or network, depending on your connection type (USB or Wi-Fi).

  • USB Connection: If you’re using a USB connection, try using a different USB port or a different cable.
  • Wi-Fi Connection: If the printer is networked via Wi-Fi, ensure the printer is connected to the correct network. You can check this on the printer’s display panel or via the HP Printer Assistant software.

6. Check for Firmware Updates

Outdated firmware can sometimes cause unusual printer behavior.

  • Visit the HP support website and check if there are any available firmware updates for the OfficeJet 4500.
  • If an update is available, follow the instructions to update the printer’s firmware.

7. Printer Reset

Performing a factory reset can sometimes resolve persistent issues.

  • On the printer, press and hold the # and 6 buttons simultaneously for about 10 seconds to reset the printer to its factory settings.
  • Be aware that this will reset all settings (such as network and paper size preferences) to default, so you may need to set them up again.

8. Test with a Different Application

Sometimes the issue may be specific to the application you’re using to print.

  • Try printing from a different program (e.g., Notepad, Word, or any other application) to see if the problem persists.
  • If the issue only happens with one application, it might be related to the application's print settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
