HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My Officejet Pro 7740 after 6 to 7 years of flawless use has suddenly stopped printing. When sending a print job I get the spinning circle on the display screen and the printer hangs up right here. I've ran all the HP diagonostics I'm aware of. I can't get a firmware to install b ut I've tried loading new drivers.

Hi @Ronn6,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is encountering a system freeze when processing print jobs. This could be due to outdated firmware, corrupt print queues, or hardware-related issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

Restart the Printer and Computer

  • Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and leave it unplugged for about 60 seconds. Plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Restart your Computer: Reboot your PC to ensure there are no pending print jobs or software issues on your end.

Check for Print Queue Issues

  • Clear the Print Queue: Sometimes, stuck print jobs can cause the printer to hang.
    1. On your PC, go to the Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
    2. Find your OfficeJet Pro 7740, right-click, and select See what's printing.
    3. Right-click inside the window and choose Cancel All Documents.
    4. Try sending the print job again after clearing the queue.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Update Drivers: Ensure you have the latest drivers installed.
    1. Go to the HP Support page and download the latest drivers for your OfficeJet Pro 7740.
    2. Install the driver and restart your computer.
  • Reinstall Printer Drivers:
    1. Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click the OfficeJet Pro 7740 and select Remove Device.
    3. Reinstall the printer by adding it again and installing the latest drivers.

Firmware Update

Since you mentioned trouble with installing firmware, you can try updating it manually:

  • Download Firmware from HP:
    1. Visit HP's support page and search for firmware specific to your printer model.
    2. Download and try installing the firmware directly from the file.
  • Firmware Update via USB: If the firmware update via network isn’t working, connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable, and try updating the firmware again.

Perform a Hard Reset

A factory reset might resolve the issue by clearing any internal memory corruption.

  • Reset Steps:
    1. On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore.
    2. Select Restore Factory Defaults.
    3. The printer will reset and restart.

Check for Connectivity Issues

If the printer is connected wirelessly:

  • Check Wi-Fi Signal: Ensure the printer has a stable connection to your network.
  • Test Ethernet Connection: If available, try connecting via Ethernet to see if the problem persists.

Printer Self-Test

  • Run the printer’s internal diagnostic by navigating through the control panel to test hardware functionality independently of external devices.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
