I am trying to print. I haven't had issues before printing from this printer with my laptop. Now I am getting the error the printer is connected but needs to be configured.

Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error you're seeing with your HP Photosmart 6520 printer saying that it is "connected but needs to be configured" can arise from a variety of issues. These might include driver or software problems, incorrect printer settings, or network connectivity issues. Below are steps to help you resolve this issue and get your printer working again.
1. Check Printer Connection:
- Ensure the Printer is Connected Properly:
- Wi-Fi Connection: If you're using Wi-Fi, ensure that the printer is still connected to the same network as your laptop. Check the printer’s display for its network status and make sure it shows that it's connected to the correct Wi-Fi network.
- USB Connection: If you're using a USB connection, check the cable and port to ensure they are secure.
2. Restart Devices:
- Restart the Printer: Turn off the HP Photosmart 6520, wait for about 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Restart Your Laptop: Reboot your laptop to reset the connection and refresh the system.
3. Run the HP Printer Troubleshooter (Windows):
- If you're using a Windows laptop, try running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This is a diagnostic tool that can help identify and fix common printer issues.
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP Support website.
- The tool will guide you through steps to fix connectivity and configuration issues.
4. Check Printer Settings:
- HP Software and Driver Configuration:
- Open HP Smart (if installed on your laptop) or go to Devices and Printers (Windows) or Printers & Scanners (Mac) to check if your printer is listed.
- If you see an issue, you may need to remove and re-add the printer.
- Windows: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners. Remove the printer and then click Add a printer or scanner to add it back.
- Mac: Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, and click the - button to remove it. Then click the + button to add the printer again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
