My printer stopped printing in color.   To try and solve the problem I turned the printer off and on, plus I've downloaded the updated driver. When printing a diagnostic page it prints all in b&w, even the items which are supposed to be in color.  In Printer Preferences I have clicked  "off" where it asks to print in grayscale.  All printer cartridges are full and are HP cartridges (902).  However, the printer thinks it's printing in color and the color cartridge ink level has gone down  each time I've printed while doing the troubleshooting even though it prints in b&w.

This problem happened all of a sudden.  It had been printing in color and b&w just fine.  I recently changed the 3 color cartridges but can't remember if I printed a test page to see if they were functioning.  I believe the problem started after changing the cartridges.

Help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bruce

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Are you able to copy in color?

Clean the printhead:

  1. From the printer control panel, open the Setup  menu.

  2. Open the Printer Maintenance menu.

  3. If necessary, open the Tools menu, and then touch Clean Printhead.

  4. If the print quality is unacceptable, touch Clean Again to continue the next level of cleaning. If necessary, repeat these steps for the third cleaning cycle.

  5. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform all three levels of cleaning again.

If the issue persists, please perform the remaining steps from this document: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-8600-premium-e-all-in-one-printer-series-n911/...

Let me know if this helps.
