My F4180 all-in-one printer won't accept a new HP ink cartridge. I only use HP cartridges. The computer gives me the message that my cartridge is faulty or incompatible with my printer.

Hi Clara_B. Thanks for your post. No, the message, word for word, was "Your Printer is in the following error state: Non-HP-Approved Ink Cartridges". It could not have been an older generation cartridge becaues it was only a month or two old and had worked perfectly in my original HP5520 printer. The contacts look sparkling and clean. The expiry date printed on the label is 2014/11. Anyway my previous post was written in a moment of intense frustration. The printer works fine now with the new cartridge except that it frequently gives an "out of paper" message even when the paper tray is full. Then I have to pull the paper out and push it back and it works again for a while. I can live with that. But still - a Photosmart printer with print, scan, copy and wi-fi, all for $69 - how good is that?

Cartridge acceptance has been problematic from day one.  It often takes multiple inserts before it will finally accept a new cartridge (HP made).  Now the cyan slot will not accept any.  I've swabbed the cartridge and the trap and still nothing.  I tried a second new cartridge and same response.

After my Photosmart 5520 printer failed while under warranty, HP replaced it with a reconditioned printer with new ink cartridges. I had removed and kept the nearly-new genuine HP black ink cartridge from the old printer and when the new black cartridge was empty I installed the old one. The printer refused to print.

When I ran the HP Hardware Diagnostic Utility 4.1 I got the message: "Your Printer is in the following error state: Non-HP-Approved Ink Cartridges". This is a scam by HP to force me to buy another new ink cartridge when I have a nearly-new genuine HP ink cartridge available. Until now I have only bought HP printers; they used to be the best. However I have been disappointed with other problems experienced with the 5520 printer and this is the last straw. Next time I buy a printer it will not be HP.

Hi Amy, try cleaning the cartridge contacts, as there could be some debris there that's preventing the printer from being able to read the cartridge.

If the steps in the link here don't work then check if the cartridge is still under warranty (there is lasermark on the body of the cartridge, format is YYYY/MM/DD). If it's under warranty then contact HP phone support as you may require a replacement.
Hope that helps
