Hi @CGS10
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet printer won't shut down, here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Power Cycle the Printer:
- Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds. This should force the printer to turn off.
- If it doesn’t respond, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and wait for 60 seconds before plugging it back in.
Check for Paper Jams:
- Sometimes, if there's a paper jam or an error, the printer may not shut down. Open the printer and check for any stuck paper or obstructions.
Check for Ongoing Tasks:
- Ensure that there are no print jobs in progress. If the printer is actively processing a job, it may not shut down.
Reset the Printer:
- After unplugging the printer, hold down the power button for about 15 seconds before plugging it back in. This can help reset any internal errors.
Update Firmware:
- If you can access the printer settings, check for any available firmware updates. Sometimes, bugs can be fixed with updates.
Factory Reset:
- If the problem persists and you can access the settings, you might consider performing a factory reset. Refer to your printer's manual for specific instructions, as this will erase all custom settings.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

This was ultimately what worked, although my implementation was not nearly as neat as it could have been!
The fix offered by Rachel gives me peace and confidence for future issues.. especially if I need something printed in a timely fashion.
I unplugged the printer from the power source overnight so the battery also ran out.. when I plugged it in the next morning, everything was fine.
