My printer has started to go into an update loop. Apparently it has never updated since I got it a few years ago as the firmware is still on 1432. It is popping up on the display that a new update is available and asks to download or exit. No matter which one I tap, it will download, and then on the attempt to install, come back up with a failure message. This repeats constantly, forcing me to restart the printer to get back to the normal screen where I can use the interface.
I tried downloading the firmware update package for 1819 this morning to see if I could get it updated. It finds the printer, pushes the udpate, and I saw a reboot that actually looked like an update (something I hadn't seen on the automated one from the printer itself), but it still comes back failed.
I have no idea at this point how to get it updated, or to get it to at least stop telling me to update. How can I force the update or clear out the issue?

UPDATE:
I was able to successfully install 1604, no thanks to HP's efforts to remove that firmware update from the internet. I was able to locate it via driverguide, about halfway down the page. It appears to be the legitimate update tool. The file name is OJPX476DN_CN1640AR_updated.exe
To make 1604 install:
Boot the printer.
Press in quick succession: home, previous, home, home, home. You are now in engineering mode. ANYTHING YOU DO HERE IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. It worked for me but YMMV.
Press Manufacturing Menu (Top choice on 1502)
Press the up or down buttons until you've cycled to "NVM/FIRMS menu" item. Press OK
Choose "clear firms" and press OK
It should give you a note that firms are cleared and you need a reboot.
after it reboots, run the 1604 firmware tool while connected via USB. It should complete successfully.
I, however, have not had any success updating from 1604 to 1819A, and my first attempt actually reverted my printer back to 1502, which is how I've confirmed this method works to go to 1604.
upon a second attempt, the printer has indeed reverted back to 1502 firmware. There is a major flaw in 1819A and I would suggest NOT trying to update past 1604 until HP fixes this flaw. I will attempt to confirm is using the HP Web Services updater breaks the update as well.

I'm having the exact same issue.
I've tried flashing firmware 1604 (The one that removed the firmware lock on 3rd party cartridges), 1502 (I found this as a Mac format updater, but it's the current firmware on the device, so it won't flash it), and the latest 1819. It will go through the initial firmware setps (Dings, shuts down, brings up the screen with a large 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and goes through steps 1, 2, and 3, without issues. It brings up the screen for step 4, no progress bar appears for a few seconds, and then it stops.
I've tried doing a factory default using the service menu, I've even gone into manufacturing mode to try and make changes there but nothing I've done so far has had any positive effect.
At one point I was able to get 1604 to flash, but upon rebooting the device it had reverted back to 1502 and it will not take firmware again.
I have also tried updating using the HP web services tool on the device, it loads a different updating screen but it still fails to update.
Anyone else have input?

Final update: Stepping to 1604 and then using the Web Services update tool to step to 1819 seems to work. I am now up to 1819. I'll see how stable this ends up being.
Use the directions above to set to 1604 and then The HP E-Print\Web Services menu to go the rest of the way. Hopefully it helps anyone else with issues. DO NOT USE THE WINDOWS OR MAC OS FIRMWARE UPDATE TOOL TO GO TO 1819 AS IT IS BROKEN.

I had to first get updated to 1502 from my 1432, but following the similar search for the update program I found it and was able to load it.
Also, I had been updating over the network, and while USB didn't immediately solve the direct update to 1819, I was able to use the USB to get the stages to 1502 and then 1640 and then use the settings menu to get to 1819.
Thank you very much.
