When I opened the front door, I noticed that the ink cartridges were lowered, not lined up with the door.

After taking off the back off, the issue that I see is that during initialization the print bar motor turns to lift the print bar, then halfway through going up, it goes all the way down (gears go the opposite way), and I get a 61.00.00 error on screen.

These more detailed errors below are in the log, a different one for each initialization, but mostly the first one:

Connection between formatter and engine lost
General engine failure
Print Bar Lift Stall
SSL failed. Certificate invalid.

During normal operation, I've never seen the ink cartridges in a lowered position and not accessible when opening the front door. It appears as if the motor is trying to get the cartridges up so they are lined up with the cartridge door but can't.  I don't think the gears should be going in both directions during this initialization process, but should just get the cartridges to the top and they stay there.

The fix says get a new formatter but the formatter has a green light and steady heartbeat, and when the error isn't on the screen I can access the web page from my computer at the printer's address to see the error log, so it seems to be working, and the "Initializing count" fails around 50 so a ton of stuff passes before failure.  On the other hand, I see the motor that lifts the cartridges is turning, so it works, but it doesn't go all the way up, "giving up" halfway and the tray then "falls" all the way back down, suggesting some sort of mechanical issue.

Any thoughts are appreciated.
