Both me and my mom have the same printer, and they stopped printing in color several weeks ago. I haven’t needed color so I did not pursue it. However, it’s frustrating. HP smart and diagnostics have not solved anything. I could print a color test page.

i hope someone May have some insights.

Hi @Michalson,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing a print quality issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-In-One Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

  • Does the copy print out the same way?
  • What are the ink levels on color ink?
  • What's the application you are trying to print from? Have you tried printing from a different application or devices?

While you respond to that, let's print a Print Quality Diagnostic page -Post the Print Quality Diagnostic page here so we can help you further.

You may also refer to this document with steps to fix " Print Quality Issues" issue applicable for your printer -  Print Quality Issues

The ink levels are good. I was able to run a test page and it printed in color. I tried two different ways to print, one from a downloaded pdf and the other from an email. Both of these printed in black and white.

HPsmart said my printer is up to date. What should I try next? its frustrating that I cannot print in color.

One of the windows computers wirelessly connected was able to print in color. The other is still stuck in black and white. Narrowing down on the issues, but not solved yet.

@Michalson,

Thank you for your response, as you have narrowed down the issue, it is a setting issue on the computer. Please follow the below steps to change the printer settings and print in color.

Change printer settings to color:

Open Windows Settings by clicking the Windows Start icon, typically located at the bottom left corner of your desktop. Then click the Settings (gear) icon.

On the Settings menu, click Devices.

Click Printers & scanners.

At the Windows Manage your device screen, click Printing preferences.

On the HP printer’s Printing Preferences screen, click the Color tab.

Under Color Options, either:

Click the Automatic / Color radio button to print in color.

Click OK to save.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I went through these steps, however, when I select printing preferences I only have layout, paper/quality and printing shortcut as options. The advanced tab also does not have the color option.

Under print properties I see general. sharing, ports, advanced, color management, security and device settings. None of these have that tab to select color. Where else can I find it? Thank you.

P. S> I recall there was this screen after I selected to print a document, but it was grayed out with the color option selected.

What often happens is that when windows installs the printer, it fails to detect the color capability of the printer or installs a Microsoft IPP or V4 driver that does not support color.

Go back to the printer properties screen you were on before and click on the device settings tab. Scroll down until you see an entry called "device type" and change from auto or mono to color. (see picture below)

If you do not see this option then very likely you have the wrong driver installed and will want to delete this printer and start over with the correct driver.

No device type option is even present. From what I can tell, the computer thinks the drivers are up to date. Do I need to completely uninstall?

Interestingly, when I used the HP Smart Printing as the default, a test page had some blue (that is, instead of HP Office Jet Pro 8710 as the default).

So close, yet so far. Thank you for all the advice so far.

  • Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe”
