until recently the printer has been work just fine.

however, this week it has had problems.

on my win10 machine, I found that scanning wasn't working.

on my win7 machine, I found that nothing works.

 

uninstalled and reinstalled on the win10 machine and everything works again.

uninstalled and reinstalled on the win7 machine and still nothing works.

 

when i attempt to go to the printer ip address chrome indicates, "this site can't be reached"

when i attempt to ping the address i get, "destination host unreachable"

 

this seems like the root of the problem, but I don't why this is suddenly an issue.

also, we use avast and I turned it off while I did the reinstall and trying to connect to the printer.

 

thank you, any help would be appreciated.

One possibility is that the ARP table has become corrupted.  Try the following on each computer:  open an administrative command prompt (click Start, type CMD.EXE, right click on the command prompt and select Run as Administrator).  In the command prompt type 

 

ARP -a 192.168.1.188      <-----  Put the actual IP address for your printer here.

 

Compare the physical address on each computer - if they are not the same the Windows 7 machine has a corrupted entry.  You can clear this by typing the following on the Windows 7 machine:

 

ARP -d 192.168.1.188      <-----  Put the actual IP address for your printer here.

 

Now try pinging the printer's IP address from the Windows 7.  Does the printer now respond?  If so try installing the driver, things should now work.

 

If the physical addresses matched on the two computers then we still have work to do.....

Is your Windows 7 PC on the same network as the Windows 10 machine and the printer?  Are the computers wired or wireless?  

 

Find the IP Address of your windows 7 machine as follows:  open a CMD.EXE window.  In the command window type IPCONFIG which will list the IP address of the computer. Compare this IP address with the IP address of the printer.  Are the first three octets the same, perhaps something like 192.168.1 ?

 

Running the diagnostics at http://www.hp.com/go/tools may help resolve the issue. Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor.

everything is on the same network.

i've run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, but since the application can't see the device, even after I tell it the IP address, it stops there.

Thank you!  That did it!  

I've never even heard of an ARP before.

She has no entries in her ARP and I don't know why.

Anyway, I put a new entry into the ARP with the MAC address and everything looks good.

Great!  I always consider it a good day when I learn something new, and must confess that in 45+ years of using computers (before the days of Microsoft or DOS) I had never used the ARP command.  I ran across this while researching the issue you presented.
