i replaced the cartridge with a new hp cartridge but the message still says cartridge depleted and I can't print.  unplugged the printer and waited 1 minute.  that didn't work.

Hi,

Which cartridge have you replaced? which cartridge has depleted?

 

Be aware that any depleted cartridge must be replaced, you cannot print with empty colors as an example:
