Hi @owestbro,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If you've already performed basic troubleshooting such as resetting the printer, clearing paper jams, installing new ink cartridges, and cleaning external parts, but you're still encountering a "problem with the print or ink system" error, there are additional steps you can try:

1. Reseat BOTH Cartridges (even if they seem fine)

This error usually comes from:

  • A poor electrical connection
  • An unreadable cartridge chip
  • Ink not making proper contact with the printhead

Do this carefully:

Steps

  1. Turn the printer ON.
  2. Open the ink door.
  3. Remove both cartridges.
  4. Clean only the gold electrical contacts with a dry, lint‑free cloth.
  5. Reseat firmly until you hear/feel a solid click.

✔ Do not use alcohol
✔ Do not touch the nozzles

2. Hard Reset (Different from unplugging)

You MUST do it while the printer is ON.

Steps

  1. With the printer powered on, unplug the power cable from the back.
  2. Unplug from the wall.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  5. Turn the printer on again.

This clears ink‑system faults stored in temporary memory.

3. Check for a Hidden Paper Scrap in the Carriage Path

After a paper jam, even a tiny ½‑inch piece can trigger this error.

Do this:

  1. Open the ink access door.
  2. Move the carriage gently left and right (don’t force it).
  3. Shine a flashlight inside.
  4. Look for scraps under:
    • The carriage
    • The rollers
    • The clear plastic encoder strip

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
