Do you mean you are connecting DIRECTLY from your desktop to your printer using LAN cable ? This is not going to work. You have to connect your computer and your printer to a switch or a router.

Options

(a) Connect them using USB cable,

(b) Connect them using wireless direct.

You may be able to connect direct using crossover cable (normally red) but I have not tested this therefore I can't tell it would work or not.

Regards.

Thanks for your good advice. Apparently the ethernet cable, router, or desktop were misbehaving. I removed the cable from the router and printer. Reversed the ethernet cable's direction. Took the printer end and placed it into the router and took the router end and placed it into the printer, rebooted the printer and the router, and the desktop to printer via router ethernet connection worked fine.
