Product: Dell Precision M4800 / HP Officejet Pro 6978
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Officejet Pro 6978 indicates plain paper (8 1/2  X 11) when envelope is trying to print from Word 360.  Changing printer to #10 envelope indicates same error.  All firmware, updates, and diagnostics have be tried several times. It seems that it use to work my just generating an envelope from Word 360 without changing anything on the printer except to load envelopes.

I understand you are trying to print envelopes. Kindly follow the steps mentioned in this document - Printing Envelopes (Windows)

 

Are you using the full-feature printer driver or the HP Smart app to print?

 

To resolve paper mismatch error, perform the steps from this document - Paper Mismatch error (Windows, Mac)

 

For step by step instructions, refer to page 24 of the user guide
