Hi @Tooter43

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Error code 3 on HP printers typically refers to a carriage jam or a cartridge issue, depending on the model. It often appears as “E3” on the printer display and prevents printing until resolved.

Here’s how to interpret and address it based on the most common causes:

1. Carriage Jam (E3 Error)

This is the most frequent meaning of error code 3 on HP printers like the ENVY, DeskJet, and OfficeJet series.

What it means:
The ink cartridge carriage (the part that moves left and right inside the printer) is stuck or obstructed.

Steps to resolve:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Open the ink access door and gently move the carriage left and right. Remove any paper or debris.
  • Check for obstructions like jammed paper, torn labels, or packaging material.
  • Close the door, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.

2. Cartridge Recognition Issue

In some models, especially those using HP+ or Instant Ink, error code 3 may also appear if the printer cannot recognize the cartridges.

What to check:

  • Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges (not Instant Ink ones if you’ve canceled the subscription).
  • Remove and reinsert the cartridges.
  • Clean the cartridge contacts with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  • Restart the printer.
