Hi @markhowe1
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error code OXC4EB8004 on your HP OfficeJet 5258 printer, accompanied by the message HW_MICCI2_V12, generally refers to a hardware issue involving the internal components of the printer. It could be related to the printer's mechanical components, such as the printhead, cartridge, or paper feed mechanism.
Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the error:
1. Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Check if the error still appears.
2. Check the Ink Cartridges
The error may be related to an issue with the ink cartridges. It could be due to improper installation or a cartridge malfunction.
- Open the ink cartridge door and remove the ink cartridges.
- Check for damage on the cartridges or any obstruction that may be preventing proper installation.
- Reinstall the cartridges and make sure they are properly seated in place.
- Inspect for protective tape on the cartridges that may have been missed during installation.
3. Check the Printhead
The error may be caused by a clogged or faulty printhead.
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the ink cartridges.
- Remove the printhead carefully from its slot (the printhead might need a little effort to release).
- Clean the printhead gently using a soft lint-free cloth dampened with water.
- If the printhead is severely clogged, it may need to be replaced.
4. Perform a Printer Reset
Resetting the printer to its factory settings can help resolve software-related issues and clear any minor hardware errors.
Steps to reset:
- Turn on the printer.
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults or Restore Factory Settings.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer.
- After the reset, check if the error persists.
5. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions
A paper jam or an obstruction inside the printer can also cause this error.
- Open the paper tray and check for any paper jams or obstructions in the paper feed area.
- Open the rear access door (if available) and ensure that there are no pieces of paper stuck inside.
- Remove any obstructions carefully.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

I learned from other sources that two other codes I got randomly were 0055-cartridge error, and 0149-carriage jam. I assume the reason I am unable to remove the color cartridge is because of the carriage jam and I didn't want to force the black cartridge under those circumstances. So I am at an impass. BTW when the printer is in error nothing can be done on the screen.
In another discussion I purchased a M182nw to match my CE310/CF350 toners but after getting conflicting answers re whether they will work I returned it and got a simple Brother monochrome.
Thank you for your detailed response; I'm sure it will be very valuable to others with less serious problems.
