Hi @BobA5111 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are getting the error code 0xc19a0042 on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 typically indicates a problem with the printhead or ink system. Since your printer prints from the computer but not from the printer or scan functions, it seems like the issue might be more related to the printhead or software configuration.
Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Clean the Printhead:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the printer’s access door to reach the printhead.
- Remove the printhead carefully (refer to your printer’s manual for specific instructions).
- Clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth and some distilled water. Avoid touching the nozzles.
- Reinstall the printhead and close the access door.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
Check for Ink Cartridge Issues:
- Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and have enough ink.
- Remove and reinstall the cartridges, making sure they click into place.
Perform a Printhead Alignment:
- Go to the printer’s control panel.
- Navigate to the setup or maintenance menu.
- Look for the option to align the printhead and follow the on-screen instructions.
Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates through the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP website.
Run Printer Diagnostics:
- Use the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel to run any diagnostic tests available. This might help identify and resolve issues with the printhead or ink system.
Reset the Printer:
- Perform a hard reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it for about 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
