Hi @GW75,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When you encounter an error message like "a problem with ink or printer system" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, and your computer indicates a printhead failure, it typically indicates an issue with either the ink cartridges or the printhead itself. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps

Check Ink Cartridges:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are correctly installed and securely seated in their respective slots.
  • Verify if the cartridges are genuine HP ink cartridges and not refilled or third-party cartridges, as these may sometimes cause compatibility issues.

Clean Printhead Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the ink cartridges and locate the printhead.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the printhead and cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 1-2 minutes, then plug the printer back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the printer and clear temporary errors.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check for and install any available firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 printer. Firmware updates can often resolve printhead issues and improve printer performance.
  • You can check for updates through the printer’s control panel menu or via the HP Support website.

Replace Printhead (if necessary):

  • If cleaning the printhead contacts does not resolve the issue, it may indicate a printhead failure.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
