I’m calling it planned obsolescence. Thankful Amazon took back the new print head.  I just bought a new printer for under $90.   RIP 8610 from 2016. To think anything lasts is naïve.  At least on my part!

Unfortunately I think you are right.  I had a long chat with HP on facebook messenger support.  The abbreviated summary is - it's out of warranty, there is no HP repair option, then they asked if they could recommend a replacement printer for me!  Needless to say, there are no printers you can buy that use the same ink cartridges.....
