I have an HP Photosmart 7520 printer. Error message show set up cartridge missing or defective. I had the official HP cartridges refilled at Costco and reinstalled them. I had removed the setup cartridge as well. After installing the ink cartridges and the setup cartridge the setup cartridge shows missing or defective. I have removed and reinstalled the setup cartridge several time. I removed the power cord from wall outlet waited several minutes then powered up again. the printer restarted and went thru its boot up process and shows the same error. Any ideas on how to resolve the error message " Setup cartridge missing or defective? Thanks for any help.

I would like to mention that the setup cartridges are only used in initial setup, its not meant to be refilled and reused, if this is not your first time setting up the printer, I suggest you remove the setup cartridges and make use of regular cartridges instead, and that should resolve the issue.

 

Using regular ink cartridges for both black & color, should fix the issue.

I removed the set up cartridge from the printer. Removed the power cord from the power source for three mins. Plug the printer back in, powered up. Still have the same error message "one or more cartridge is missing or damaged", shows the emblem for the set--up cartridge on the screen . Do I need to replace the set-up cartridge with a standard black printer cartridge.

@ss72 That's exactly correct, you need to get yourself a standard black & color cartridge, instead of the setup cartridge to resolve this issue: click here for details on getting a genuine HP Ink cartridge.
