HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Upon installing a new ink cartridge  got this error message: there is a problem with your printer or ink system.turn printer off, then on. if problem persists contact HP.

tried turning printer on and off

tried unplugging and turning on and off

tried reinserting the old cartridge   it was accepted didnt get that error message but got the message that it was depleted and needed to be replaced

got another package of ink cartridges with the same results

i believe it has to be a problem with recognition of the new cartridges

do you need an updated driver with new cartridges?

Hi @Jeff3323

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying that out so clearly—it’s incredibly frustrating when a new cartridge triggers a system error, especially after trying multiple replacements. This points to a problem with cartridge recognition or the printhead itself.

Let’s walk through a few deeper steps that may help:

🧼 1. Clean the Cartridge and Printhead Contacts

Even a tiny bit of residue or misalignment can cause this error.

  • Power off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean:
    • The copper-colored contacts on each cartridge.
    • The corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Let everything dry for 10 minutes, then reinstall the cartridges.

🔄 2. Reset the Printer

This can help clear internal memory glitches.

  1. With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  2. Unplug from the wall outlet.
  3. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds (while unplugged).
  5. Plug it back in and power on.

🖨 3. Try a Different Cartridge Combination

  • If the old cartridge is accepted (but marked as depleted), and the new one triggers the error, the issue may be with the new cartridge’s chip.
  • Try mixing and matching cartridges (e.g., use the new black with old color cartridges) to isolate which one is causing the fault.

🛠 4. Check for Firmware Updates

Let me know how far you get with these steps or if you'd like help identifying the faulty cartridge. We’ll get this sorted together.
