Hi @david19472,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When the amber exclamation point light is illuminated on your HP LaserJet MFP M232 printer, it typically indicates a warning or error condition. This could mean a few different things, such as.

  1. Low Toner: The toner cartridge may be running low and needs to be replaced.
  2. Paper Jam: There might be a paper jam somewhere in the printer.
  3. Door Open: A printer door (such as the front cover or rear access door) may be open or not securely closed.
  4. Other Errors: There could be other issues, such as connectivity problems or a malfunction.

Steps to Resolve the Amber Exclamation Point:

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Open the printer and check for any jammed paper. Remove any paper that is stuck.

Ensure Doors Are Closed:

  • Make sure that all printer doors and covers are closed securely.

Check Toner Level:

  • If your printer has a display, it may show the toner level. If it's low, replace the toner cartridge.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Check for Error Messages:

  • If your printer has a display, check for any error messages that can guide you to the specific problem.

Update Drivers/Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer drivers and firmware are up to date. You can do this via the HP support website.

Reset the Printer:

  • If the light persists and there are no visible issues, try performing a factory reset. Refer to the printer’s manual for specific instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I do get an error code of 49.  But I can't find what error 49 means.

Do you know?

Hi @david19472,

Thank you for your response,

The amber exclamation point on your HP LaserJet MFP M232 printer, combined with error code 49, typically indicates a firmware or communication error that can occur for several reasons. Here’s a more detailed approach to advanced troubleshooting steps for resolving the error and the warning light.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a Hard Reset:
    1. Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.
    2. Wait for at least 60 seconds.
    3. Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer.

Check for Unsupported Files or Fonts:

  • Error 49 can occur when the printer receives a corrupted print job or an unsupported file type.
  • Clear the Print Queue:
    • On your computer, go to the printer settings and clear the print queue. You can do this by right-clicking the printer in Devices and Printers and selecting "See what's printing." Cancel all documents.
  • Try Printing a Basic Document:
    • Create a simple text document (like a Notepad file) and try printing it to see if the issue persists.

Update Firmware:

  • Sometimes, error codes can be resolved by updating the printer’s firmware. Visit the HP Support website to download the latest firmware for your model.
  • Follow the instructions provided on the website to install the firmware.

Reset Network Settings (if connected via network):

  • If your printer is connected to a network, consider resetting the network settings:
    1. Access the printer's control panel.
    2. Navigate to the network settings and choose the option to reset to factory defaults.
    3. Reconfigure the network settings.

Check Connections:

  • Ensure that all cables (USB or network) are securely connected. If using USB, try a different port or cable.

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • Remove and reseat the toner cartridge and any other removable components.
  • Inspect the printer for any obstructions or hardware faults. Look closely at the paper feed mechanism and rollers.

Try Safe Mode:

  • Some printers allow you to boot into a "safe mode" that disables certain features, which may help isolate the problem. Check the manual for instructions on entering safe mode if available.

These advanced steps should help you troubleshoot the error and resolve the amber exclamation point warning.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
