My hp officejet 6958 won't print black ink. I have replaced the cartridge and the printer says the ink level is full. The printer says I have the latest software. I have printed test pages and done 3 step print head cleaning twice. I have reset the printer. The test pages show color but no black. It won't print black from the scanner either. I am using genuine HP ink.

Hi @heatherand,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thanks for reaching out, and we understand how frustrating this issue can be. Based on your description, it sounds like you've already done a thorough job troubleshooting, including replacing the cartridge, updating the firmware, and running multiple printhead cleanings. If your HP OfficeJet 6958 is printing color but not black at all, and test pages still show no black ink, here’s what we recommend.
HP Recommended Steps for "Black Ink Not Printing"
1. Ensure protective tape was removed
Double-check that the orange protective plastic tab or vent tape from the black cartridge was completely removed. If it’s still partially covering the ink port or vent, ink won’t flow.
2. Check the cartridge vent
Make sure the small vent hole at the top of the black cartridge isn’t clogged. To clear it:
- Use a straight pin to gently poke the vent hole (located near the HP logo on top of the cartridge)
- Compare with a color cartridge to ensure it looks open and similar
3. Manually clean the printhead
If normal cleaning doesn’t help, a manual cleaning of the printhead can often restore black printing.
Here’s how to do it:
- Remove the black ink cartridge
- Gently blot the copper-colored contacts and nozzles on the bottom of the printhead with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water
- Do not touch the nozzles directly—just blot any excess ink buildup
- Let it dry for a few minutes, reinstall the cartridge, and try printing again
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
