Officejet 8610 Error Code 0xc 19a0040: " Printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed"

When I try to print, I get the above-referenced error code&message.  All the ink cartridges have plenty of ink.  I have tried the recommended fix of unplugging, lifting carriage latch, lifting printhead slightly, then back down and wiggling back and forth, then plugging in.  Have done that 5 or 6 times, but still get same error message.

Is there a fix for this?  If not, can printhead be replaced (if so, at what cost?).

OR:  is it time to replace the printer itself? (which would be irritating since I have quite a bit of money into brand new ink cartridges, all colors, for this machine, all of which would go to waste).

Thanks for any advice, either to actually fix the problem, or to enable me to ascertain that there is no point putting any more time/effort into this machine.
