HP ENVY 6032e All-in-One Printer

After a short time, sometime within minutes on booting, the printer goes to sleep and does not wake on the next print request.  HP Smart says asleep. IF I reboot printer or run PC printer troubleshooter then the printer comes to life. Have tried DHCP and manual IP config, both the same result.  Printer will airprint from iPhone. Printer is networked WIFI to router which is etherneted to PC  *DELL  64bit win 10. 

 

Further to my original post have noticed that the PC is using a WSD "port" to communicate with the printer ; could this be the problem?

My Fix:

Change printer to fixed IP address.

On the PC – on ports tab for printer create TCP/IP port with that IP address and select .

I cleared up the ports as I had WSD port ( selected)  and a different fixed IP address port.  The second IP address port was difficult to delete and I had to stop spooler, clear the spooler folder, before I could delete it.

Assume that on my system the WSD was not finding the printer possibly due to corruption in the ports table or  the spooler.

Printer now wakes up from sleep.

There is definitely a problem as the printer is not waking up from sleep.  I do not know where the problem might be but possibly it could be mitigated by changing the sleep.  Log into your printer setup and set sleep to "off" or "never"

See if this helps until the problem can be found.  Possibly the printer has a problem or the computer is not sending the correct wakeup message.

Thanks BeemerBiker but strugling to find printer sleep option. Have energy efficiecy option set to 15 mins nut no "never"

Makes sure the printer is on line so that HP Smart can see it.

Sleep is described on page 15 but basically says to bring up the embedded web server page 36

I do not have your model printer so am guessing as the manual does not show any options

To open the embedded web server through a network
1. From the printer control panel, press and hold (the Information button) until all the buttons light
up, and then press and at the same time to print the wireless network test report and
network configuration page.
2. Find out the IP address or hostname of the printer from the network configuration page.
3. In a supported web browser on your computer, type the IP address or hostname assigned to the printer.
For example, if the IP address is 192.168.0.12, type the following address into a web browser:
https://192.168.0.12.

 

My EWB is 192.168.1.120 which you can see in my post.

 

If the printer is online it should show up in the WSD Print Provider of the Device Manager

There is a firmware update that that is dated March 2024 but all  it does is makes sure you use HP cartridges.  I did not see anything about fixing the sleep 

 

HP smart has an advanced setup but turn the printer off and back on to ensure that HP Smart can access it if the above EWS does not work.

Possible fix but not sure why,  Noticed PC was iusng a WSD port to find and communicate with printer,  So gave printer fixed IP address and made PC port fixed IP address and it appears to be working,

That is good to know, I am glad you discovered that as this sleeping problem shows up periodically.

 

AFAICT setting a fixed IP address should not make any difference.  That being said I just logged into my modem and set my Canon 702a to have a fixed IP address.   My HP LJ does not have a problem sleeping and it wakes up immediately but the Canon does not respond.  This will be a good test.

WSD is just a tool that allows a user to access the printer through a "web" interface.  My LJ printer's IP4 address  is 192.168.1.120 and my photo printer is  1.15

 

Clicking on or entering http://192.168.1.120 into a browser allows me to check ink levels and set sleep and other parameters and not have hunt through the control panel and printer properties to find where they have been hidden.

 

Setting a fixed IP address seems the correct thing to do as the PC will try to wake up an old IP address and will fail.

 

Something else that might have worked would have been to identify the printer using it's name and with the name of the modem (subnet name)  For example, my LJ can be accessed using NPI40CB07.attlocal.net and this works even if the ip address changes.  Homes or offices with Mesh (multiple WiFi boosters) need to have the device fully identified or the IP fixed or the printer cannot be discovered.
